چکیده

A tutorial study is performed on the capacity of multiple antenna wireless communication systems. Multiple antenna structures can be classified into single-input multiple-outputs (SIMO), multiple-inputs singleoutput (MISO), and multiple-inputs multiple-outputs (MIMO) systems. Assuming that the channel is known at receiver, capacity expressions are provided for each structure, under the conditions of quasi-static flat fading. Also, information rate limits are provided in each case for some suboptimal structures or detection techniques that may be used in practice. Using simulations for the case of flat Rayleigh fading, capacities of optimal/suboptimal implementations are contrasted for each multi-antenna structure. Discussions are made on system design, regarding implementation complexity and practical limitations on achieving these capacities. In particular, the problem of fading correlation and required antenna spacing, effect of fast channel fading, and lack of channel knowledge at receiver are discussed. Providing the results of the most recent researches considering the capacity of multiantenna systems, as well as some new results, this paper can give a good perspective for designing appropriate architectures in different wireless communication applications.

The Capacity of MIMO Wireless Systems with Mutual Coupling

MIMO wireless systems employing antenna arrays with close inter-element spacings exhibit a high degree of mutual coupling. In this case, the channel transfer matrix is a function of the matching network employed at transmit and receive. Existing capacity expressions are inappropriate, since the maximum mutual information will depend on antenna element loading. This paper develops a new expressi...

Spatial Correlation of Multiple Antenna Arrays in Wireless Communication Systems

This paper investigates the spatial correlation characteristics of multiple antenna arrays deployed in wireless communication systems. First, we derive a general closed-form formula for the spatial correlation function (SCF) of a multiple antenna array with arbitrary array configuration under uniform signal angular energy distribution. Based on this formula, we then explore the characteristics ...

Multi-Dimensional Wideband Radio Channel Characterisation for 2-6 GHz Band

Future wireless communication systems employ higher carrier frequencies and wider bandwidths than the 2G/3G systems. Moreover, dual-polarised antenna arrays will most probably be employed for improved coverage and higher data rates. As a result multi-dimensional knowledge of the mobile radio channel with fine resolution becomes available for adaptive utilisation of the channel capacity. At the ...

Optimization Capabilities of LMS and SMI Algorithm for Smart Antenna Systems (RESEARCH NOTE)

In the present paper convergence characteristics of Sample matrix Inversion (SMI) and Least Mean Square (LMS) adaptive beam-forming algorithms (ABFA) are compared for a Smart Antenna System (SAS) in a multipath environment. SAS are employed at base stations for radiating narrow beams at the desired mobile users. The ABFA are incorporated in the digital signal processors for adjusting the weight...
